QUOTE

I've traveled the world twice over,
Met the famous; saints and sinners,
Poets and artists, kings and queens,
Old stars and hopeful beginners,
I've been where no-one's been before,
Learned secrets from writers and cooks
All with one library ticket
To the wonderful world of books.

Welcome back!  It is absolutely amazing to reflect on 2007-2008 when our theme was Imagine the Possibilities.  Through the hard work and dedication of many teachers and administrators we achieved more than I imagined.

We completed 87 units of study!

We added literacy coaches to every building!

We had 157 Parkway teachers participate in our First Annual Parkway  Literacy Institute!

The theme for 2008-2009 is SYNERGY!   It is exciting to think about the SYNERGY that has been brewing over the summer as classroom teachers, literacy coaches, reading intervention specialists, special educators, administrators, and library media specialists learned together at our First Annual Parkway Literacy Institute in July.  With the addition of literacy coaches in every building it is an opportune time for the synergy to continue to fuel us forward and what an impact it will have on student achievement.

“Literacy is not merely a cognitive skill of reading, writing and arithmetic, for literacy helps in the acquisition of learning and life skills that, when strengthened by usage and application throughout people’s lives, lead to forms of individual, community and societal development that are sustainable,” says Koïchiro Matsuura, UNESCO Director-General in his message on the occasion of International Literacy Day 2006.
