OASIS

Parkway School District is proud to be part of the OASIS Intergenerational Tutoring Program. This program pairs an older adult volunteer with an elementary student to help develop the child’s reading and language skills. Besides improving reading skills, the program builds self-esteem and a positive attitude toward learning.

The program focuses mainly on students in kindergarten through third grade. The time commitment with the student is 30 minutes a week throughout the school year. The volunteer does not need any previous teaching experience - just enthusiasm, patience and compassion to be a friend and role model.

Prospective tutors need to complete a training class and a background check. Regular tutor meetings provide help, support, and enrichment ideas for working with students.
