ABOUT THE BOOK

It’s a story told by Ayukta to her wife Nadya over the course of a night and day. They’re deciding if they want to have children, and Ayukta must share her deepest secret in order for them to have the conversation honestly. The secret: Her family inheritance, a tapestry, grants her ancestral memory and an immense power to change her world.

We travel through Ayukta’s oral history to 1946 Karachi, where she begins with the story of her grandmother. Amla’s life is forever changed when she takes a steamboat to Gujarat ahead of Partition, witnessing violence and loss that forever shape her approach to marriage and motherhood. Amla's daughter, Arni, bears this weight in her own blood in 1974, when gender equity and urban class distinctions divide the community against the backdrop of student movements and the impending 1975 Emergency. And then there is Ayukta, trying to figure out if this inheritance is a gift or a curse, and aching to share this history with the woman she loves.
