What we heard from community Thoughtexchanges
12/21/2020 -- Over 6,000 parents, teachers and students shared feedback in December about current learning experiences in our online Thoughtexchanges. Here are the top themes among students, teachers, staff and parents:
-
Many students are struggling without in-person learning. The blended schedule has been the most challenging for students, families and teachers. Asynchronous, independent learning days at home are difficult particularly for our youngest learners and their teachers and families.
-
Parents overwhelmingly praise our teachers and school staff for working very hard under difficult circumstances to reach every child and ensure quality teaching and learning. Our families recognize learning environments this year have been challenging for our teachers who want each child to succeed.
-
Teachers and staff are worried about the health and safety of in-person learning and want to ensure many best practices are implemented to keep students and staff safe at school.
-
Students and teachers need stability and consistent schedules to ensure the most effective learning. Students in Virtual Campus are receiving consistent instruction each day, but our in-person learners have not.
-
The social-emotional and mental health of many children is concerning without in-person learning. Students miss the social interactions and relationships with teachers, staff and their friends at school.
-
While some students are thriving, many others are not as engaged or motivated in distance learning due to how they learn best.
-
Students, parents and teachers express concern about screen time, the length of distance learning days and course length, particularly for secondary students.
