Virtual Meetings Rescheduled

The virtual meeting schedule for Tuesday evening has been moved up and one additional meeting has been added.  I will be offering two separate meeting options to try and allow for as many people as possible to "attend".  These meetings will be tomorrow, 7/25 (Saturday) at 2 pm and 7/26 (Sunday) at 2 pm.  Hopefully, by having these prior to the deadline at the end of day Sunday, I can answer any last-minute questions that you may have.  If there is a change that needs to be made to your request after attending the meeting, you would e-mail that directly to me prior to the deadline at end of day on Sunday.

I will answer all remaining questions that have been submitted to the best of my ability during the meetings. If you have questions during the meeting, you will be able to submit them via the Chat feature in Zoom.

Information about how to register for one of the two meetings is below.

Special Requests for T/TH or W/F

This message is for families who have chosen the in-person learning option for the 2020-21 school year.

As we begin placing students into groups for in-person learning on either Tuesdays/Thursdays or Wednesdays/Fridays, we want to be as responsive as possible to urgent family needs. For example, you may have specific needs due to family daycare arrangements or employer requirements.

If your family situation requires a strong preference for one of the in-person options (either Tuesdays/Thursdays or Wednesdays/Fridays), we want to hear from you.

Please contact me by e-mail (tmcquerrey@parkwayschools.net) by end of day on Sunday (7/26) so we can make every effort to place your child in the learning option days that best meets your family's needs.

We realize these are very difficult and challenging times for many families, and while we cannot guarantee every request will be met, we want to do everything we can to help.

Music Electives and Gifted Education

Unfortunately, I still do not have all the details regarding band, choir, and orchestra.  What I do know is that we will make every effort to honor the requests for courses students selected for this upcoming year. As always, whether any course is offered is dependent on the number of students who enroll and available staffing. A small number of courses, including choir and band, are still under review to determine how they can be modified while following St. Louis County and CDC recommendations, but students will still sign up for these courses.

If your child receives gifted services at South Middle, they will continue to participate in Gifted whether they choose the in-person or virtual option.

Backpacks

We appreciate the feedback that we have received regarding allowing students to bring backpacks to school.  We have also recently been informed that 6th grade students will not be provided with Chromebook cases this year, and will instead have a more robust hard case.  For these reasons, we will be allowing all students to bring backpacks to school.  Our reasoning for not allowing backpacks was to limit the amount of unnecessary materials that students may bring back and forth from school and this is still a concern. There are very few items that students will need to bring to school on a daily basis under our current plan. Students' backpacks should only include the following items.

  • Chromebook
  • Water bottle
  • Lunch bag if not purchasing
  • Personal Hygiene items
  • Emergency Medication (inhaler, epinephrine auto injector) (with proper authorization on file with nurse)

We encourage students to choose a small backpack that is large enough to hold these items. The student's school supplies bag will stay at school and not be transported home. We will also be encouraging teachers to use online and virtual methods for homework so that in most cases, no materials are going home with students on a daily basis.

We want to start the school year with as many precautions in place as possible. For this reason, it is important that additional items are not brought to school in backpacks to limit the possible spread of the virus.
