1. Copy a map of Afghanistan and the surrounding countries.  Locate Herat and Kabul.
2. Read the timeline of the history of Afghanistan from 1973 to 2003.

  Put the events in order and include the dates.

• Daoud Khan overthrows King Zahir Shah and establishes a republic
• Hamid Karzai sworn in as leader of interim government following the fall of the Taliban
• 9/11
• US sends arms to support the Mujahadeen ( a guerilla movement opposing communist rule) against the Soviet Union
• The Mujahadeen overthrow Najibullah.  The Mujahadeen begins to collapse as warlords fight for control.
• Daoud Khan is overthrown (killed) by communist forces
• Soviet Union withdraws and set up a puppet communist government under Najibullah
• The Taliban destroy Buddhist statues in Bamiyan, Afghanistan
• Taliban rises to power
• Soviet Union invades Afghanistan

3. Read the article “Women in Afghanistan.”  List the restrictions placed on women during the reign of the Taliban.
