    17 September 2023 - Viking News

    Dear Northeast Middle families,

I hope this email finds you well. As we head into week 5 of school, scholars are starting to see their grades develop. This week, I will be sending out an in-progress grade report to highlight where your child currently is at. It is important to note that we have 2 days a week during COM (Community) that are designated for AcLab. This is a perfect time for scholars to prepare for a re-take, study, complete missing work, etc.

Next week, scholars finish their NWEA testing in English (Reading), Math, and Science. Following this testing window, you will receive a report of where your child is currently performing on this nationally normed assessment.

Last week was our first technology free day and scholars did a terrific job. We look forward to moving throughout the year with these days to help promote not only proper technology usage but how we can "survive" without it at times.

On September 27th, the Visiting Nurse Association will be offering flu shots for scholars from 1:30p-2:30p in the Northeast Middle health clinic. If you are interested in having your child get their flu shot during school, please complete this form

This upcoming week, each scholar will be completing a Scholar Support Survey during health class. This is a tool to help determine ways to best support scholar well-being and the social emotional needs of the Northeast Middle school community. Topics addressed range from academic habits, soft skills, emotional intelligence, and the identification of interest in various groups. Feel free to reach out to your child's grade-level counselor, if you have any questions. We are looking forward to offering supports to meet the unique needs of each of our scholars.

Lastly, I wanted to share some math family resources. This information can be helpful as you prepare to review your child's grades and want a deeper understanding of what they are learning in math and some practice problems for the topics. Moving forward, I will try to include these in each week's update.

    Kevin

    10 September 2023 - Viking News

    Dear Northeast Middle families,

We are excited to begin after-school activities this week. We are always doing our best to offer various activities that scholars can engage with and continue their connection to Northeast Middle. Throughout the year, activities will evolve. Scholars need to not only inform their parents/guardians if they are staying after but also sign-up using Flex. This system does require the scholar to be logged into their Parkway email.

Grades are starting to get entered into the gradebooks. As missing assignments begin to appear, not only may scholars use AcLab during COM to complete such, but they need to have them submitted prior to the summative test for that unit. This includes submitting a Late Slip to the teacher for each late assignment. Further, we have begun a "not-yet" policy for any major papers, or exams. Scholars may initiate a one-time re-take to have the opportunity to improve their grade on such. Please note the scholar must communicate with the teacher and properly re-prepare prior to this one-time re-take. If you have any questions, please don't hesitate to reach out to any teacher. Our goal is the success of all scholars.

In ELA classes, scholars are working on words each week. New this year, at the end of each week, scholars will have a "test" over two of the words where they need to spell the word correctly and use it in context. We hope by starting this, it will help all scholars further their understanding of words, be able to break words down, and advance their skills of general word knowledge. I will try to include these words in each Viking News moving forward, so you may incorporate them at home, as well.

    • 6th - controversy, contradict, contrary, controversially (prefix of contra/contro)
    • 7th - submarine, subpar, submerge, subconsciously (prefix of sub)
    • 8th - gentrification, indigenous, genuinely, generate (root of gen)

Have a great week and if you have any concerns, questions, or celebrations, don't hesitate to reach out. This includes sharing positive news of our scholars outside of the school day.

    Your Partner In Education,

    Kevin

    3 September 2023 - Viking News

    Dear Northeast Middle families,

Happy Labor Day weekend. Picture day is this week on Thursday! After-School activities will begin on Monday, September 11th, and more information can be found here. Our musical this year is Aladdin, Jr. and those interested in auditioning should be watching the daily announcements for more information.

If your scholar is new this year and for some reason, didn't get a charger with their Chromebook, this is the last call to get it. Any scholar who didn't receive one has until Wednesday, September 6th, to see Mr. Russell in the TechStop to get their charger. After that any replacement chargers are $25 each.

Scholars are doing a terrific job bringing their planner daily and filling it out. We hope not only that this is helping them with organization but also communicating to families what work was and was not completed throughout the school day. If a scholar loses one, there are replacements available for $2 in Student Services.

Lastly, just a friendly reminder that scholars should each have a pair of headphones that plug into their Chromebook, bring their Chromebook and planner daily, and have something to write with for each class. On early release days, so September 13th, will be a technology free day and we ask all scholars to keep their Chromebooks at home that day. We hope by having technology free days, we can model how to appropriately use technology.

    Gradebooks Are Open!!!

The purpose of a grade is to clearly communicate each scholar's achievement of the standards and learning goals of their course. This belief forms the foundation of our approach to researching and implementing improved grading practices.

In order to ensure that grades effectively communicate scholar learning, teachers have worked to create consistency in grading categories by course across the district. These categories are related to essential learning outcomes for each course and highlight the necessary knowledge, skills, and understanding essential for success. Teachers will enter scores for assignments, projects, assessments, etc into the appropriate category(ies) within Infinite Campus. For each reporting term, a summary score for the course will be represented by a percent and letter grade. Valued behaviors that impact learning will continue to be reported separately as academic responsibility.

Most scholars won't have homework, unless they have not completed the work during class. The exception would be the goal of reading at least 30 minutes a night and practicing their instrument for any music class.

We aim to ensure that grading practices provide meaningful feedback about your child's performance, foster their growth, and support their academic journey.

Q: Will the grade be calculated as a traditional letter grade?

A: Yes, traditional letter grades will be earned by scholars and become final at the end of each semester.

Q: How is the grade calculated?

A: The grade is calculated by dividing the points earned by the total points possible. In classes that have not assigned weighted averages to their categories the in-progress and semester grade is determined by the percent of points earned.  In some courses, the categories use a weighted average to determine the summary letter grade and percentage. The weight of each category corresponds to the significance of that category to the course learning outcomes. See more information here on how a weighted grade is calculated.

Q: Can an individual assessment or assignment contain skills that fall into more than one grading category?

A: Yes,  scholar work may contain evidence of understanding in multiple categories. In order to provide more specific feedback on students' strengths and areas for improvement the points earned in each category will be entered into Infinite Campus in the corresponding category.

    27 August 2023 - Viking News

    Dear Northeast Middle families,

The first week back after summer break has been an exhilarating whirlwind of reconnecting with friends, meeting new teachers, and embarking on fresh academic adventures. The hallways were filled with such positive energy as scholars shared new stories, navigated the hallways, and had a renewed sense of curiosity. As we begin to move from summer mode to the structure routine of school life, scholars have done a terrific job adapting, adjusting, and learning. We look forward to the year ahead continuing in this manner, to ensure everyone's success and opportunity of memorable experiences.

As with any start, we are continuing to work with the transportation department to make adjustment to bus routes. Not only do we remain short drivers, we also are figuring out how many scholars are on each bus. Hopefully within the next few weeks, we will have some adjustments to accommodate all the scholars appropriately.

This year we have over 100 more scholars than last year. With the increase in number of scholars, come additional car riders. It is important that we all work together. Therefore, we kindly ask that if you are dropping your child off in the morning, to pull all the forward and do not stop at the door. This will allow traffic to flow and not have back ups. Thank you for assistance.

    Your Partner In Education,

    Kevin

Introducing MAP Growth / NWEA Testing

This school year, Parkway is using a new tool to measure your child's academic growth and progress. We are excited because this will offer more immediate information to you and your child's teachers about their progress.

Three times this year (fall, winter, and spring) your child will take a Growth test on their Chromebook in reading, math, ands cience. The test is designed by NWEA, which is used in schools across the country.

Teachers can use the results immediately to better understand your child's achievement and growth on state and Parkway learning standards. These results will provide a more complete picture of what your child knows, is ready to learn, and whether they are on, above, or below their grade-level at that time.

Since the new Growth tests provide immediate and accurate information about your child's learning, it's easy for teachers to identify scholars with similar scores who are generally ready for instruction in similar skills and topics. This will allow teachers to personalize learning for your child.

We are truly excited to focus on your child's individual growth and achievement and offer immediate results on how they are doing this year.

For more information about NWEA Growth tests, visit NWEA.org/familytoolkit or talk to your child's teacher.

It is the eve of a new school year and we are thrilled to welcome our scholars back for another year! Tomorrow marks the beginning of a new chapter in your child's academic and personal growth. We are looking forward to partnering with you and remember to not hesitate to reach out with any questions or concerns.

We extend our appreciation to the numerous families who were able to join us for a successful Meet the Teacher night. Each year, we reflect on our processes to enhance your experience, and this year witnessed our biggest turnout yet. We acknowledge that this is a positive challenge to address; however, we understand that it led to certain frustrations, particularly in regard to parking. We sincerely apologize for any inconvenience caused.

Your support and active participation are invaluable to us, and we are already planning to ensure smoother logistics in the future. Please accept our gratitude for your understanding and patience, and rest assured that we are committed to making improvements for all upcoming events.

When scholars arrive on Monday, the doors will open at 7:55a, and they will receive the most updated copy of their schedule in their Character Time (CT) class. Please note there continues to be minor changes to schedules, as new scholars enroll and we have to balance sections.

    Happy first day of school!!!

    Parkway School's Vision Venue

When visiting Northeast Middle this fall, take a minute to look at Parkway's "Vision for a Learner". We would love any feedback you may have. The draft vision will be posted near the main entry through mid-September.

Since January, parents, community, staff, and scholars have been giving input into this updated vision for scholars. The vision tells us what it looks like when each scholar is prepared to respond to the challenges of an ever-changing world. Our final vision for scholars will ultimately drive our 5-year strategic plan through 2030.

Some of the ABCs of information, reminders...

    After-School Activities

    • After-school activities will begin on Monday, September 11th. Scholars will sign-up using Flex! for the activity and bus. Activities are generally Mondays, Wednesdays, and Thursdays, until 4:30p. Check out additional information for our activities here

    Behavior Expectations

    • We expect all of our scholars to follow the Viking Values and understand sometimes they fall short. We are here to help and support them. Here is the Scholar HUB. This is the place, you will find all of our school policies and procedures. Scholars who ride the bus, we want to remind them it is a privilege. For the safety of all on the bus, scholars are to always remain in their seat, use school appropriate language, keep their hands to themself, and sit in assigned seat, when applicable. For those that elect not to follow these expectations, there will be one warning, followed by bus suspensions.

    Cell Phones and Electronics

    • In our rapidly changing tech world, research highlights negative effects of cell phones, electronics, and social media, especially on our pre-teens and teens. We have been proactive in refining policies over the last few years. Scholars in all grades can't use these devices during school hours; smart watches can be worn but not for texting/music. AirPods aren't allowed; Chromebook compatible headphones that are wired are needed. Chromebooks should be brought to school daily. We appreciate your support in advance and want to be clear that failure to comply with this policy will result in the device having to picked-up by an adult and/or other disciplinary action.

    Eighth Graders

    • The 8th grade year marks a significant milestone in one's educational journey, filled with moments of celebrations. These include the annual Six Flags trip, the 8th grade celebration ceremony and dance. Many families also choose to purchase a baby ad and yearbook. While these opportunities are exciting, they do involve expenses. Hence, I'd like to inform you to expect an approximate cost of $100 for the Six Flags trip, celebration dance, and class shirt. This advance notice aims to aid you in your financial planning.

    Field Trips

    • Field trips are integral for scholars' learning and life skills. We strongly believe they enhance the educational journey, fostering connections, different experiences, social growth, and knowledge expansion. Thus, we value these opportunities and wish to notify you in advance for financial planning. Each team plans to organize at least one field trip per semester, expected to cost under $25 each. Our commitment ensures every scholar can participate, regardless of financial constraints. Please don't hesitate to contact us for inquiries, concerns, or assistance requirements.

    Important Dates

    • This one-pager has all of the important dates for the entire school year. It includes concerts, plays, school pictures, outdoor school, and more.

    Lunch and Snacks

    • Breakfast and lunch is offered every full and early release day of school. Scholars are encouraged to have a water bottle or bottle of water with them in class. Vending machines and the snack bar do have items available for purchase. Some classes will allow scholars to eat a snack based on when their lunch time is. We encourage all families who may qualify for free/reduced lunch program, to apply today.

    Physical Education and Health

    • On most 8-period days, scholars will engage in health class. Therefore, there are two (2) days a week that scholars will have PE. It is the expectation on those days that scholars have the proper footwear. This means they must have gym shoes, crocs (with a back strap), etc. They will not be allowed to wear boots, slides, or other shoes that aren't safe. We do not change out in middle school, so it is important to wear proper clothing on PE days.

    Planners

    • All scholars will be provided a planner each semester. It is the expectation that scholars bring their planner to class each day. Teachers will start the year off by signing off on each planner daily in all classes. In addition, this is a great way to check to see what your child learned for the day and what things still need to be completed. Replacement planners will be available for purchase for $2 in Student Services.

Principals' and Grade-Level Council - Apply Today

    • Scholar voice is important to us. New this year we are adding a grade-level council that will meet with the assistant principal to discuss the overall climate and culture, problem solve and develop action plans that promote grade-level improvement. We will continue to have Principals' Council that will plan school wide events, discuss any ongoing issues or concerns, and further promote a strong school climate and culture from the scholar perspective. Apply today, as applications are due by Tuesday, September 5th.

    School Times

    • The doors open at 7:55a, the first class begins at 8:20a, and the day concludes at 3:20p. Car riders are dropped off on the north side through door #13. 6th grade pick-up will remain in the rear of the building near the tennis courts; 7th/8th grade pick-up will be in the north lot.Bus

For the safety of all on the bus, scholars are to always remain in their seat, use school appropriate language, keep their hands to themself, and sit in assigned seat, when applicable. For those that elect not to follow these expectations, there will be one warning, followed by bus suspensions.

    Bus Information

    • Bus schedules will be emailed out on Tuesday, August 15th. Please note bus routes continue to change and it is important to check "Find My Bus Stop" the day before school to have the latest information. If you have any questions regarding transportation, please call 415-8415.

    Class and Bell Schedules

    • Class schedules (including team assignments) will be released on the morning of Wednesday, August 16th through Infinite Campus. If you need your login or assistance, please email ic-parenthelp@parkwayschools.net. Here are the following documents to help prepare for the day-to-day: Bell Schedule and Academic Calendar.

    Lockers

    • All scholars in 6th grade will be offered a locker. They will have their name on their assigned locker and it will be available during Meet the Teacher night. This is a great time to bring up supplies and organize their lockers. Scholars in 7th or 8th grade may request a locker by emailing Ms. Kate Hanvey (khanvey@parkwayschools.net). Lockers are limited and do require a lock. Scholars are only allowed to go to the locker during the designated times.

New Scholar and 6th Grade Scholar Orientation Reminder

    • For those that are new to Northeast or in the 6th grade and signed-up for orientation, this is a reminder that it is on Thursday, August 17th. This is a scholar only event and bus riders will be picked-up at their regularly scheduled pick-up time. Orientation concludes at 11:45a. If you plan on picking-up your scholar, please note they will be on the north lot in the designated areas. Bus riders should be home no later than 12:20p.

Outdoor School (All 6th Grade Families)

    • There will be a mandatory meeting for all 6th grade families on Thursday, August 31st at 6p in the Great Hall. This meeting is for Outdoor School. Both families and scholars are encouraged to attend. During this meeting they will discuss the $275 cost and much more.

    July 2023 - Viking News

    Dear Northeast Middle families,

I hope this email finds you well and that you are enjoying a fantastic summer break filled with sunshine, laughter, and cherished memories. As we soak up the warm days, I wanted to take a moment to share some information about the quickly approaching school year.

The start of a new school year is always a time of anticipation and enthusiasm, and this year will be no exception. Our dedicated team of teachers and staff are preparing to ensure that the 2023-2024 academic year remains filled with engaging learning experiences, valuable opportunities, and a nurturing environment for all of our scholars.

We look forward to welcoming our incoming sixth grade and new scholars to Northeast Middle on August 17th. To facilitate a smooth transition, we will be hosting our annual orientation day where scholars will have a chance to familiarize themselves with our school, connect with peers, and learn a little bit more about Northeast Middle. Details regarding the orientation day registration have been sent out to those families.

At Northeast Middle, we prioritize relationships, ensuring each scholar matters, and using every moment with purpose. Further, academic excellence, character development (Viking Values), and personal growth are aligned greatly with our mission. Throughout the year, we will continue to encourage scholars to explore their interests, develop critical thinking skills, and cultivate a love for learning. As in the past, we will offer various extracurricular activities, productions, and clubs for scholars to find their passions outside the classroom. Activities will begin on Monday, September 11th.

As we prepare for the first day of school, I want to share our Scholar HUB. This is the place, you will find all of our school policies and procedures. It is always beneficial to review this for essential information as it relates to Northeast Middle.

It is important to us that we have a strong partnership between our school, and families. This is vital to a scholar's success, so we invite you to be engaged throughout the school year. Meet the Teacher night is on Wednesday, August 16th. Our fall semester PTO meeting will be on October 3rd, at 5:30p. Lastly, I will be starting a family/school advisory group regarding the use of technology, sharing of research and best practices, for Northeast Middle specifically. If you are interested in serving on this group, please email me. Once we have the group formed, we will find a time to meet quarterly that works best for all participants.

The faculty and staff at Northeast are always here to address any questions or concerns you may have. Thank you for entrusting us with the privilege of educating and nurturing your child(ren). Together, I look forward to making this upcoming academic year a memorable one!

Wishing you a continued joy-filled summer and look forward to seeing everyone soon,

    Kevin

    School Supply List

    • Glue sticks
    • Facial tissue
    • Colored pencils
    • Markers

Note: Some courses may require some additional items for their course (i.e. band, orchestra, etc.).

    Bell and Class Schedules

Class schedules (including team assignments) will be released on the morning of Wednesday, August 16th through Infinite Campus. If you need your login or assistance, please email ic-parenthelp@parkwayschools.net.

Here are the following documents to help prepare for the day-to-day:

    Breakfast and Lunch

Breakfast and lunch is not free for all scholars again this year. We encourage all families who may qualify for free/reduced lunch program, to apply today.

Bus Riders, Parent Drop-Off and Pick-Up

Information for bus riders will be provided by the district by Wednesday, August 16th. Car riders should be dropped off on the north side through door #13 (doors open at 7:55a). 6th grade pick-up will be in the rear of the building near the tennis courts; 7th / 8th grade pick-up will be in the north lot. Bus information will be available the week of August 15th, and more information can be found here.Bus

    Cell Phones and Electronics

The world of technology we live in is ever changing. There continues to be growing research about the negative effects that cell phones, electronics, and social media has on teens particularly. We recognize this and are always continuing to reflect on our practices, policies, and procedures. Therefore, as previously communicated, scholars will not be allowed to use cell phones, smart watches, electronics throughout the entire school day. Upon entering the building, these devices are to be out of sight and off. Smart watches are allowed to be worn but not used for texting and/or music purposes throughout the day. Further, AirPods are not allowed, but rather headphones that plug into the Chromebook are required.

At the end of the day, we are concerned regarding the use of cell phones and the effects it is having on our scholars and their abilities to be fully engaged in their learning and appropriate social aspects of the school day.

Failure to comply with this will result in the device needing to be picked-up, and other disciplinary action.

    Chromebooks

All scholars (except new ones) should have their Chromebook from last year. If there are issues with the Chromebook or it is not working properly (including staying charged), we strongly encourage you get it repaired prior to the start of the school year. Please reach out to Kyle Russell (krussell@parkwayschools.net) or bring the Chromebook to Meet the Teacher night on August 16th.

The end of the school year is quickly approaching. We still have 7.5 educational days of learning ahead. May 31st is either Six Flags Day for 8th graders, or field type day experiences for 6th and 7th graders.

We will end our 2022-2023 school year, on Thursday, June 1st, with dismissal at 12:20p. Scholars will watch the final games of our soccer and kickball tournament. Followed by our annual Food Truck Day. Scholars may use cash or card to purchase various items from the nearly 10 food trucks we will have.

This week 8th grade families will receive a final email outlining the details for the celebration ceremony, dance, and Six Flags Day.

Thank you for a great school year...it has truly been one of the best. It has been a pleasure and for our 8th grade families, we wish you well as you transition to North High. Final grades will be posted on the Parent Portal, after June 6th. This will conclude the Viking News for the 2022-2023 school year.

    14 May 2023 - Viking News

    Dear Northeast Middle families,

Friday was a culminating event that was truly a memorable experience as we witnessed the North High class of 2023 take a senior walk through their old hallways of Northeast. If you want to see this moment, head over to our Facebook page and watch the video. We can't wait to see the amazing things these seniors will accomplish in the future.

With the school year rapidly drawing to a close, we will be concluding our MAP and EOC testing this week. On Tuesday, Wednesday, and Thursday, our scholars will need to bring their Chromebooks and headphones for the math and 8th grade science exams. Additionally, I would like to remind families to check their child's Infinite Campus account to ensure their grades are where they need to be before the final report cards are issued. It's important to stay informed and updated now, prior to waiting to the last few days of the semester.

On May 30th, we will be celebrating our 8th graders with a special ceremony during the school day. Families have already received an email with the exact time of their child's ceremony. Just a friendly reminder that each 8th grader will be given three (3) tickets and one (1) parking pass on May 26th for the event. We kindly ask that families do not arrive before their designated time, as parking is extremely limited. We will be live streaming the event on our Facebook page. Please park at the rear and north side of the building and enter through door #13 located on the north side.

The last day for after-school activities will be Wednesday, May 17th. We appreciate everyone's participation in activities throughout the year.

Lastly, I would like to extend a heartfelt Mother's Day greeting to all the amazing mothers, grandmothers, aunts, and sisters out there. Enjoy your day.

    Your Partner In Education,

    Kevin

    Expectation Reminder
I would like to take a moment to commend the scholars who consistently make responsible decisions, live up to our Viking Values, and show up to school ready to learn every day. This year overall, has been one of my best during my time in education. Scholars have truly done a terrific job. We understand that occasionally, a middle schooler may fall short of our expectations, and that's okay. Our faculty and staff are here to provide guidance and support to help them get back on track. That being said, it's important to keep in mind that scholars have had over 150 days of instruction, and by now the expectations have been clearly communicated. As we approach the end of the school year, let's all work together to finish on a positive note and avoid any unnecessary consequences.
