On Thurs., June 1, the Parkway Alumni Association will host the annual jazz concert commemorating the life and career of Parkway West band director Dr. John Baker.
The event will be held at the Sky Music Lounge, located at 930 Kehrs Mill Rd. in Ballwin (in the Barn at Lucerne at the corner of Kehrs Mill and Clayton roads). The event will take place 7:30-10:00 p.m. Doors will open at 7 p.m.
Students are welcome to attend if they are accompanied by an adult.
The concert will be performed by Parkway's Faculty and Friends big-band ensemble! The band is comprised of music educators and area professional performers connected to the Parkway School District and Baker.
Admission for the concert is a $10 minimum donation at the door. Proceeds will go to the John Baker Scholarship Fund, which benefits band students through the Parkway Alumni Association’s (PAA) Granting Dreams Program. All donations are tax-deductible.
Dr. Baker was the band director at Parkway West High School from 1978-1994. Since 2001, The Faculty and Friends Big Band, a group made up of colleagues, friends and former students, have performed an annual tribute concert to honor his memory.
“He is remembered for his passion for music, dedication to and belief in his students, high expectations and laughter,” said Drew Davis, who plays in the Faculty and Friends Big Band and is also band director at Southwest Middle School.
