What assessments will my 3rd grader take?
Students will be assessed in a variety of ways in 3rd grade.
Reading:
To assess their reading level, students will be given a Fountas and Pinnel reading assessment. This involves reading part of the book out loud to the teacher to check for fluency and accuracy, and part of the book in their head. They are then asked a series of questions in a conversational format to check their understanding of the book. When a student progresses to the next level you will receive a note home so you can celebrate their success!
Students will also be given Benchmark reading assessments. These are given electronically and test their skill of reading short texts and answering questions. These will be taken 3 times this school year. This will show their progress over all skills studied in 3rd grade.
Students will be given 5 four-question end-of-unit reading assessment this year. This will show their progress over specific skills in the unit studies.
Writing:
Students will publish a writing piece at the end of each unit for a grade.
Math:
Students will be given three Benchmark math assessments. These are given electronically and test the skills learned during 3rd grade.
Assessments will be given at the end of each math unit.
Science and Social Studies:
An assessment will be given at the end of each unit.
