Prerequisite: None
To help students gain confidence and poise while public speaking, students will present a wide variety of speeches in an informal classroom atmosphere, including but not limited to: Information, Demonstration, Persuasive and Commemorative Speeches. Self-expression through speaking, listening, and critical thinking is emphasized. Evaluation is based on preparation, performance, criticism, and self-reflection.

An introductory course to the world of theatre. This class will cover aspects of the theatre, including the play, the actor, and the audience. Group and individual performances and projects will be used to develop skills necessary for theatre. Students should expect minimal homework.

This course will introduce students to the art of performing comedy. Students will perform in scripted and original works using a variety of forms which may include: improv, sketch and stand up comedy. Students should expect minimal memorization and homework.

Advanced Comedic Performance

Prerequisite: Grade of B or better in Comedy in Action
This course is meant to build on skills learned in Comedy in Action and will offer additional opportunities to showcase these in a public performance created and produced by the class which may include: Long Form Improvisation, Devised Theatre, Solo Performance, and Sketch Comedy. Students should expect some memorization and minimal homework.

Performing for Musical Theatre

Prerequisite: Previous acting, singing, or dance experience is helpful but not required
This course will introduce students to the performance techniques of musical theatre, including vocal, acting and dance. Students will participate in performances of musical theater scenes and songs. Students should expect some homework and performance outside of class time. This course is offered during even school years opposite of Shakespeare in Performance.

Shakespeare in Performance

Prerequisite: English 1
This course is designed for the student interested in performing the works of Shakespeare. Students will use improvisation, scene work and monologues in performance and actually try their hand at stage combat and fencing! Elizabethan acting and production style will also be studied. Students should expect some memorization and homework. This course is offered during odd school years opposite of Performing for Musical Theatre.

This course will introduce the use of characterization, movement, and analysis through contemporary monologues and scenes. Students will become more comfortable analyzing, memorizing and performing for an audience. Students should expect some homework and preparation outside of class time.

This course will explore different methods and styles of acting, using classical monologues and scenes. Students will develop advanced acting techniques through analysis, historical research and critical thinking. Memorization is required. Students should expect some homework and preparation outside of class time.

This course will cover areas of technical theatre design & construction which may include: scenic, lighting, sound, properties and costume/makeup elements. Students should expect homework. Additional after school and/or evening hours may also be required.

Directing (Honors Option)

Prerequisite: 12th Grade and a grade of B or better in Foundations of Acting, Advanced Acting, and Technical Design & Construction, and permission of the instructor.
In this course, students will combine their learned knowledge of acting and design with directing concepts, research management, and application while producing a one-act play for a public performance. Students should expect a significant amount of reading, analyzing, preparation, and rehearsal time outside of class, both during and in preceding semesters. An Honors grade may be earned.
