This course provides students with an opportunity to use their knowledge, time, ideas, and energy in a very practical setting. Students are assigned as classroom assistants to a teacher at West High or at one of the feeder schools. Cadet teachers will be provided opportunities: tutor individual students and conduct review sessions with small groups. Transportation to the feeder schools is the responsibility of the student. This is a special course for students to have the opportunity to learn laboratory skills needed for any scientific career. The student will develop skills in making chemical solutions, raising laboratory animals, microbiology techniques, maintaining equipment and supplies used in science classes, and assisting teachers in preparing for laboratory activities. They may also work on a scientific project under teacher supervision. Students must be reliable and enjoy working with science materials. Permission from the science department is required. The number of students accepted per class period is very limited.990990

Independent study is an option that is available for students that have a special interest, motivation or ability, and commitment to complete course work on his or her own. Students must find a certified teacher willing to offer their course independently. The following procedure should be followed:
1. Student needs to contact the appropriate teacher to discuss possible areas of study.
2. Together, the teacher and student in conjunction with the instructional leader should write an Independent Study Proposal. They will define and complete the proposal with the following: Desired Results; Assessment Evidence; and Learning Plan, outlining specific assignments, topics, timelines, and meetings for which the student will receive ½ credit (per semester).
