Best Practices for Using AI
For Students
- Purpose/Ethics: Use AI to enhance or assist the learning process for the given task. Think of it as a coach/thought partner and not a replacement for thinking and learning.
- Check for Bias and Accuracy: Answers should never be taken at face value due to bias and inaccuracies.
- Age Restrictions: Many AI tools are restricted to users age 18 and over. Be sure to check terms of service.
- Privacy: Once information is entered into AI chatbots, it is no longer private information. Avoid entering personal or confidential information.
- Be transparent: Cite that you have used AI and how.
For Educators
- Check for Bias: AI might occasionally produce biased or incorrect content. Always double-check before sharing with students.
- The 80-20 Approach: Use AI for initial work, but make sure to add your final touch, review for bias and accuracy, and contextualize appropriately for the last 20%.
- Your Judgment Matters: See AI-generated content as a starting point, not the final version.
- Know the Limits: AI’s knowledge stops on its last training date, so recent topics may not be up-to-date.
- Protect Privacy: Don’t include personal student details like names and addresses.
- AI Detection: AI detectors are not foolproof and can yield inaccurate results. Don’t rely solely on AI writing detectors.
